Two JUI-F leaders arrested as Azadi March nears
ISLAMABAD: Two leaders of Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazlur Rehman (JUI-F) were arrested on Monday as the party’s anti-government rally neared the federal capital with just a few days left.
The Islamabad police took Maulana Shafiq-ur-Rehman and Maulana Muhammad Irshad into custody when they spotted at Shams Colony with banners for the upcoming JUI-F sit-in.
According to the police, the two were held for urging people to attend the anti-government rally. The police also lodged a case against the duo.
The police said few people who were putting up banners for the JUI-F sit-in absconded from the site as the police began chasing them. The activity has been barred as per limitations of Section 144 imposed in the area.
“In case of a breakdown in negotiation between the government and JUI-F, the law enforcement agencies will detain Maulana Fazlur Rehman with the key leadership of the party,” sources from the Ministry of Interior revealed.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman could be detained well before the planned dharna scheduled on Oct 31,” the sources added.
