Gulalai Ismail’s father sent to jail on a 14-day judicial remand
Rights activist Gulalai Ismail’s father Professor Muhammad Ismail was sent to jail on a 14-day judicial remand on Friday.
The decision came a day after his daughter alleged that he had been picked up from outside the Peshawar High Court.
Muhammad’s lawyer Fazl Khan said the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Peshawar had nabbed his client after registering a First Information Report (FIR) against him under the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act 2016.
The FIA had requested that Gulalai’s father be handed over for a physical remand but the court sent him on a judicial remand instead for 14 days. Khan told DawnTV that they would soon file for bail.
On Friday, Gulalai tweeted that her father was brought to the court premises. At this, US Assistant Secretary of State Alice G. Wells also raised her concern over “reports of the continued harassment” of rights activist Gulalai’s family and her father’s detention.
