Three killed, two injured in firing incident at Karachi Super Highway
KARACHI: At least three people were killed and two were injured after an altercation took place between the toll plaza staff and truck drivers, on Wednesday.
According to news reports, an altercation between overloaded trucks and the staff of a toll plaza near Kathore More Link road took place. The staff stopped overloaded trucks and trawlers, resulting in a scuffle between the drivers and the staff.
During the brawl, unidentified men opened fire, resulting in five persons getting severely injured. All injured were shifted to Jinnah Hospital where three succumbed to their wounds.
Truck drivers started a protest and blocked both sides of the M-9 motorway. A traffic jam ensued and traffic between Karachi and Hyderabad remained suspended for 10 hours.
Police tried to hold talks with protesters to get them to end the sit-in. However, when negotiations didn’t work, police resorted to use tear gas and baton-charging to disperse the crowd. A clash took place and protesters refused to give in, pelting police officers with stones.
