KARACHI: Pakistani Journalist Cyril Almeida, who wrote the infamous ‘Dawn Leaks’ story, announced on Monday that he had resigned from the newspaper and had ended his weekly Sunday column.

Taking to Twitter, the former Dawn staffer stated that ‘a break from the media’ was on the cards.

“Some more work news, belatedly: I have resigned from Dawn and ended the Sunday column. Am deeply grateful for the readership and affection over the years.

There is no plan to return to writing in the foreseeable future, a break from the media appears to be on the cards,” he tweeted.

Cyril had made headlines in Pakistan and abroad owing to the infamous ‘Dawn Leaks’ controversy. Cyril wrote a story published in Dawn in 2016 that claimed that a verbal confrontation between civilian and military leaders took place in a high-level meeting.

The government and the armed forces both claimed that the story was false. A probe was held and shortly after, then-information minister Pervaiz Rashid was made to resign as a result of the ‘leak’.

Many political pundits and analysts believe the story caused a lot of friction and distrust between the armed forces and the government of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
