Riz Ahmed, Jameela Jamil pull out of event honoring Modi
NEW YORK: In a major embarrassment from India British actors Riz Ahmed and Jameela Jamil have reportedly pulled out of an event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will receive the ‘Global Goalkeeper Award’ for Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.
The event is being hosted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
According to organziers, the Indian Prime Minister will be conferred the award on Tuesday, 24 September, during his visit to the USA.
Journalist Azad Essa tweeted that the two British actors had withdrawn their names from the event.
According to the Gates Foundation, the ‘Global Goalkeeper Award’ is a “special recognition” that celebrates a political leader who has “demonstrated their commitment to the Global Goals through impactful work in their country and/or globally.”
Modi will be honoured for his leadership of the Swachch Bharat Mission which aims to accelerate the efforts to achieve universal sanitation coverage in the country by this year as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary.
The Gates Foundation is facing mounting pressure from rights groups to rescind award for Modi over the human rights situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir.
This is a huge development!
