Maryam eligible to be PML-N’s vice president, ECP dismisses PTI petition

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has ruled that Maryam Nawaz is eligible to be PML-N’s vice president, dismissing the PTI’s petition, on Tuesday.

The ECP dismssed a petition by a PTI member, seeking Maryam’s disqualification as the party’s vice president.
The decision had been reserved by a three-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Sardar Raza Khan. The bench had reserved its decision on Monday.

After Maryam was appointed PML-N’s vice president in May, PTI leaders Farrukh Habib, Maleeka Bukhari, Kanwal Shauzab and Javeria Zafar had filed the petition against her.

PTI lawyer Hasan Maan had claimed that since Maryam had been convicted in a NAB reference, she didn’t deserve to hold the post of vice president.

Maan cited the example of a PTI candidate from South Punjab, Rai Hasan Nawaz, who had been disqualified from his party post on the same basis.

The PML-N lawyer, on the other end, argued that Maryam had not been elected but appointed to the post. He also said that the PTI petitioners were in no way affected with her appointment.
