LAHORE: PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz announced on Monday that she would dedicate her upcoming Sargodha rally to the people of Indian occupied Kashmir.

The statement from the PML-N leader comes a few hours after India revoked Article 370 and Article 35-A of the constitution that gave the special status to the occupied Kashmir territory.

“My rally in Sargodha tomorrow is now dedicated to Kashmir. Shall not only express solidarity with our Kashmiri brethren but will highlight Indian govt’s atrocities, human rights violations & dictatorial decree of revoking article 370 & reneging on all international commitments,” she tweeted.

Indian Home Minister Amit Shah presented a bill to revoke Article 370 of the constitution in Kashmir. As soon as the announcement was made, a ruckus ensued in the Indian parliament, where Amit Shah made the revelation.

Article 370 gives the state of Jammu and Kashmir the special status. This means that the province has the right to determine who is a member of the state and who isn’t.

The provision, inserted through a special Presidential order in 1954, also gives the state Assembly powers to determine the recipients of state grants, the right to purchase land and property in the state, as well as settling permanently in the region.

Other than this, the legislative Assembly of Jammu & Kashmir can use the provision to restrict rights of any person not classified under “permanent resident” of the state.
