Veteran film, drama and stage actor Firdous Jamal evoked anger on social media after he criticised actress Mahira Khan, calling her too aged to play the role of a heroine.

Mahira is arguably Pakistan’s most popular actress. She is the only Pakistani actor who has had a chance to share screen space with Shah Rukh Khan in a leading role and that too for a Bollywood flick.

However, veteran actor Firdous Jamal lashed out at the actress in actor Faysal Qureshi’s morning show, referring to her as an ageing actress.

“I think Mahira is an average, mediocre actress,” he said. “Women of her age should not be cast as heroines. They should play roles as mothers at this age,” he added.

Faysal chimed in by stating that none of Mahira’s films this year have done well. Social media did not take the comments made by the two in stride and bashed both of them for hypocrisy and calling out a woman for her age.

Some were quick to point out that male actors in their 50s could romance women twice their age in films and drama serials but get away with it.

The actress has not responded to Jamal’s criticism yet. Who knows, Maybe Mahira will take a potshot at Mr Jamal?
