Nawaz’s plea against Al-Azizia verdict to be heard on Sept 18
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has scheduled September 18 for the hearing of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s petition seeking suspension of his jail term in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference.
The hearing has been pushed to September due to summer vacations. A two-judge bench including Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani will hear the former premier’s plea.
On the same day, the top court will also hear the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) appeal against Nawaz’s acquittal in another reference concerning involvement in the Flagship Investment reference.
On December 24, 2018, accountability judge Arshad Malik handed Sharif a seven-year jail term in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference. The ousted premier was also acquitted in the Flagship reference.
The court had observed that there was concrete evidence against Nawaz in the Al-Azizia reference, adding that he was unable to provide a money trail in the case. Nawaz was also slapped with a fine of Rs1.5 billion and $25 million.
