Jab They Met: 5 U Turns taken by Trump in meeting with Imran Khan

WASHINGTON: Who would’ve thought President Trump, of all people, would sing praises of Prime Minister Imran Khan and the people of Pakistan less than a year after their Twitter spat.

There was much talk of Prime Minister Khan’s first official state visit to the United States of America after assuming the mantle of prime minister.

And visit the United States he did, indulging in a joint press talk with the most powerful man on the Earth, President Donald Trump.

The atmosphere was tense as the two leaders had thrown around accusations at each other’s countries last year on Twitter.

Here’s what was said between Trump and Imran BEFORE they met:-

In November 2018, Trump alleged that Pakistan had been taking money from the USA and had been deliberately withholding information about Osama bin Laden’s whereabouts.

“Of course we should have captured Osama Bin Laden long before we did. I pointed him out in my book just BEFORE the attack on the World Trade Center. President Clinton famously missed his shot. We paid Pakistan Billions of Dollars & they never told us he was living there. Fools!..” he tweeted.

President Trump then said again in another tweet that Pakistan had done nothing for the US in Afghanistan and in the case of Osama bin Laden. He said that Pakistan was among the countries that had taken a lot from the USA but had done nothing in return.

“We no longer pay Pakistan the $Billions because they would take our money and do nothing for us, Bin Laden being a prime example, Afghanistan being another. They were just one of many countries that take from the United States without giving anything in return. That’s ENDING!” he tweeted.

A populist leader himself who rarely lets another leader in Pakistan (or abroad too, it seems) Khan was not one to back down and took to Twitter to challenge ‘Trump’s false assertions’.

“Trump’s false assertions add insult to the injury Pak has suffered in US WoT in terms of lives lost & destabilised & economic costs. He needs to be informed abt historical facts. Pak has suffered enough fighting US’s war. Now we will do what is best for our people & our interests,” he tweeted.

As we know quite well from his cricketing days, once Khan gets going, there’s no stopping him…

Mother of all U Turns: Khan meets Trump

Enter Khan into the White House and a warm handshake from Trump greeted him straightaway. Both leaders proceeded to speak to the press.

U Turn 1

In response to a question, Trump said about Pakistan (a country he had accused of hiding Bin Laden and being dishonest with the USA in the tweets above): “The prime minister hasn’t extended me an invitation yet. I think he will after we talk but yeah, I’d love to visit Pakistan if he invites me,” he said.

You think that was too much? Get a load of this.

U Turn 2

Trump praised the people of Pakistan and said that US aid could be resumed for Pakistan.

“I think the relationship between Pakistan and the USA has changed a lot and is better than it ever was previously,” he said. “We have some things we need them to do and yes we could restart that (aid),” he added.

U Turn 3

He accused Pakistan of dishonesty in the tweets above. In front of Khan, he says Pakistan doesn’t lie!

“Iran does propaganda–Iran lies a lot. Pakistan doesn’t do that, does it?” he turned towards Prime Minister Khan, jokingly.

“Definitely not, definitely not,” replied Prime Minister Khan.

“Pakistan doesn’t lie but Iran does,” he said.

He did accuse of terrorism and hiding Bin Laden, right?

U Turn 4: President Trump credited Pakistan by saying that it was working to save millions of lives.

“I think Pakistan is doing a wonderful job. I think Pakistan is trying to save millions of lives in Afghanistan through this peace process,” he said.

U-Turn 5: Trump promised to campaign for Prime Minister Khan in 2020 and help him win! This, for the guy he indulged in a verbal spat on Twitter last year!

Lesson learned: When it comes to our prime minister and Trump, the American president favours the U Turn more!
