ISLAMABAD: Social media was rife with claims of journalist, columnist and ex-advisor to the prime minister, Irfan Siddiqui, being arrested by ‘plainclothes’ men, on Saturday.

Former PCB chairman and renowned journalist Najam Sethi claimed that Siddiqui had been picked up in the federal capital.

“Shocking! Plainclothes men picked up columnist Irfan Siddiqii Saheb as he was strolling outside his house. Some trumped up charge. Will our big media owners black this out as well? Where are our honourable courts? Will they stamp approval on the new fascism in Pakistan?” tweeted Sethi.

Another renowned journalist and anchor, Matiullah Jan, tweeted about Siddiqui’s arrest.

“Senior journalist, columnist and Ex advisor to PMLN Govt Irfan Siddiqui picked up by apparently some law enforcement agencies an hour ago. Sources say those who arrested him introduced themselves as officials from police station RAMNA, ISLAMABAD,” he tweeted.

Siddiqui is a renowned journalist, columnist and a former advisor to the prime minister. Siddiqui was appointed Advisor on National History and Literary Heritage during the PML-N government.

Political opponents claimed that Siddiqui used to pen former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s speeches when he was the country’s premier.
