Death toll rises to 24 in Sadiqabad train accident

RAHIM YAR KHAN: Three more passengers, including a child and a woman, were disclosed dead from Thursday’s train collision in Sadiqabad, raising the death toll to 24.

Akbar Express was heading to Lahore from Quetta when it hit a waiting freight train at the Walhar Railway Station in Sadiqabad Tehsil of Punjab.

According to officials, the accident was caused by the passenger train which instead of running on the mainline went on the wrong track. Three to four bogies of the passenger train derailed while the engine was completely destroyed.

Rescue operation around the wreckage has been completed and all the dead bodies have been recovered from there while work to remove the rubble will continue today.

A control room and helpline were also established for further assistance in the rescue operation.

Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed said the train accident was the result of human negligence— and assured that all assistance will be provided to the families of the deceased and the injured.

A compensation of Rs1.5 million will be paid to the families of those killed in the accident, while Rs500,000 will be given to those critically injured.

Rs200,000 will be given to those with minor injuries.
