No concessions for those not availing tax concessions: PM
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan hinted at taking action against tax evaders on Tuesday, saying that no concessions would be given to individuals who do not avail the tax amnesty scheme.
The prime minister held a meeting with his economic team comprising FBR Chairman Shabbar Zaidi, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and State Minister for Revenue Hammad Azhar.
The FBR chairman briefed Prime Minister Khan on the tax amnesty scheme while Hammad Azhar briefed the premier on the extension of filing tax returns and tax revenue.
Sources in a media report claimed that the team also discussed the upcoming budget with the premier. The budget will be presented on June 11.
Prime Minister Khan asked his economic team as to what actons were being taken to bring the influential under the tax net. He questioned his economic team as to why were the salaried class only being brought under the tax net.
All institutions stand with the government when it comes to catching tax evaders, said Prime Minister Imran Khan.
A few months ago, the government introduced the tax amnesty scheme which allowed money and offshore liquid assets to be whitened for a percentage of tax.
Interestingly, when he was not in government, Imran Khan severely criticised the Shahid Khaqan-led government for introducing an amnesty scheme.
Khan had claimed that amnesty schemes were a joke with the honest, salaried class as it protected the wealth of the corrupt elite.
