The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Monday said that Eid-ul-Fitr would be celebrated in the province on Tuesday in line with the announcement of an unofficial moon sighting committee.

In a statement, KP Information Minister Shaukat Yousufzai said that the decision was taken after taking into account ‘testimonies’ of moon sighting received from all over the province.

The KP government spokesperson said that the decision to hold Eid was taken by Chief Minister Mahmood Khan. The chief minister and governor will offer Eid prayers at the Governor House.

The minister said that the government received a number of testimonies for Shawwal moon sighting from the erstwhile Federal Administrative Tribal Areas (FATA).

“We will celebrate Eid tomorrow for the provincial harmony,” he said.

The announcement came hours after Masjid Qasim Ali Khan announced that it would observe Eid on Tuesday.

Shahab-ud-din Popalzai made the announcement, claiming that he had received 25 testimonies about the sighting of the moon.

In a message, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mehmood Khan congratulated people for celebrating Eid in the province.

Meanwhile, Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee led by Mufti Muneeb ur Rehman will meet on Tuesday evening to sight the moon and make a formal announcement.

While the KP government announced Tuesday to be the first day of Eid, questions were raised about Fawad Chaudhry’s launch of Hijri calendar and moon sighting website that suggested that June 5 would be the first day of Eid across Pakistan.

Responding to a tweet, Fawad Chaudhry said that it would take some time before people accepted the use of technology for such occasion.
