ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry announced that he was launching Pakistan’s first official Moon Sighting website and Hijri Calendar.

The former information minister took to Twitter on Sunday to make the important announcement that was likely to irk religious clergy.

“Today ll launch Pakistan first official MoonSighting website and Hijri Calender,” Chaudhry tweeted.

His move came despite objections from Mufti Muneeb ur Rehman, who heads the country’s official Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.

Earlier this month, Chaudhry announced the formation of a committee of experts to determine a five-year calendar to end the moon sighting controversy.

The Islamic calendar, he added, would determine the exact date of Eid ul Fitr, Muharram, Ramazan and other Islamic events.

Chaudhry’s announcement has drawn condemnations from Islamic clerics, who argue that it was none of the minister’s business.
