LAHORE: An altercation resulted in the suspension of membership of three opposition MPAs belonging to the Punjab Assembly, on Friday.

The ruckus began when opposition members started shouting slogans against a report on Local Government Bill when it came under discussion.

The Standing Committee on Local Government on Thursday approved the report on the Local Government Bill.

Members of the opposition in the assembly rejected key points of the report. As the law minister attempted to defend the points in the report, opposition members staged a walkout.

The deputy speaker of the assembly suspended the memberships of three opposition MPAs after they chanted anti-government slogans and engaged in a verbal spat with the deputy speaker.

Pir Ashraf Rasool, Uzma Bukhari and Mian Abdul Rauf were the suspended MPAs. MPA Pir Ashraf Rasool was suspended while the bill was being presented.

The other two were suspended while a video of the incident was being replayed by the deputy speaker.

“The opposition wants to have its way in every other matter,” said Punjab Law Minister Basharat Raja. “The government had tried its best to bring the opposition on-board,” he added.
