Lahore sessions court fines Meesha Shafi Rs10,000

LAHORE: Singer and actress Meesha Shafi was fined Rs10,000 by a Lahore sessions court after her lawyer failed to show up, on Wednesday.

According to a report, the singer was fined by the sessions court after her lawyer failed to appear at a hearing of the Ali Zafar defamation case.

Ali Zafar’s legal counsel, Ambreen Qureshi, said that Meesha Shafi’s frequent absences from court was a deliberate attempt to delay court proceedings.

Ali Zafar has filed a defamation case against Meesha Shafi after the former accused the latter of sexual harassment last year.

Meesha Shafi claimed that Ali Zafar harassed her on more than once occasion. Ali Zafar dismissed Meesha Shafi’s allegations and sued her for defamation under the Defamation Ordinance 2002 for Rs1 billion.

On Tuesday, the Lahore High Court dismissed a decision by the District judge to announce the decision of the defamation case by April 15. The LHC issued directive to the court to decide the case in 90 days and said that Meesha’s legal team could seek a further extension.

Ali Zafar has said in the past that he would not respond to the actress on social media and other avenues and would prefer to fight his case in court.

The Channo singer has shied away in the past from discussing the case in interviews and on public platforms.
