Greatly appreciate PM Khan’s statement on Afghanistan: US envoy
ISLAMABAD: Greatly appreciate Prime Minister Imran Khan’s statement on Afghanistan, said US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad.
US Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad praised the prime minister for his statement on not being a party to internal conflict in Afghanistan.
“Greatly appreciate @ImranKhanPTI’s statement yesterday on #Afghanistan. His appeal for reduction of violence and policy against promoting internal conflict in other nations has potential to positively transform the region and give #Pakistan a leading role,” he tweeted.
Prime Minister Khan had stated that Pakistan would fully support the Afghan peace process. He said that Pakistan would not become a party to any internal conflict in Afghanistan.
“Pakistan has committed all diplomatic and security capital to success of peace process,” he had said in his statement.
Tensions had risen between Islamabad and Kabul after Prime Minister Khan had said last month that an interim government in Afghanistan should be formed to hold peace talks with Taliban officials and the USA.
Imran was quoted as saying that the Taliban wanted to meet him but it had been cancelled after Kabul had protested.
Afghanistan reacted strongly to the statement, recalling its ambassador to Pakistan and warning Prime Minister Khan from interfering in Kabul’s internal matters.
Pakistan’s foreign office had stated that the prime minister’s remarks had been misinterpreted as he was merely referring to Pakistan’s model where elections were held under an interim government.
