Aasia Bibi’s lawyer addresses EU parliament, praises Justice Khosa for landmark verdict
ISLAMABAD: Aasia Bibi’s counsel Saiful Malook has praised Supreme Court judge Justice Asif Saeed Khosa over the acquittal of Christian woman in a blasphemy case.
Justice Khosa was part a three-judge Supreme Court bench which unanimously ordered the acquittal of Aasia Bibi on October 30. The verdict was penned by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar while Justice Khosa wrote an additional note which drew a praise from rights activists.
The landmark ruling sparked nationwide protests led by far-right religious group Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (ELP). The protests came to an end after the government signed a controversial deal with the TLP.
A few days after the verdict, Bibi’s lawyer Saif fled Pakistan over security concerns. He has been granted asylum by the Netherlands.
“In the current scenario, it’s not possible for me to live in Pakistan,” the 62-year-old told AFP. “I need to stay alive as I still have to fight the legal battle for Aasia Bibi.”
Malook is currently in The Hague.
Malik told Express Tribune that he had written to the UN office in Pakistan seeking security for his family. Malook was dismayed at the inadequate security provided to his family by the authorities.
In his speech at the European Parliament, he credited Justice Asif Saeed Khosa for the decision. He also dismissed chances of a review petition being entertained in the matter.
Malook is scheduled to meet EU Parliament President Antonio Tajani later today.
